Estimates the amount of elk genetics in elk/red hybrid deer
The Genomnz™ G3 Hybrid Test, which replaced the original Genomnz™ Elk Test that was developed by AgResearch in 1996, is a highly sensitive assay designed to estimate the proportion of elk in animals thought to be typical elk or elk/red deer hybrids.
Developed using reference standards of 120 red deer samples and 387 wild elk samples collected from 12 different geographical locations in Canada and North America, the test is specifically designed to identify animals with a history of red deer genetics.
By analysing the DNA profile of the animal in relation to known allele frequencies of the natural populations of elk and red deer, the proportion of elk is estimated and the results presented in the form of a Genometer™. This report provides an estimated percentage of elk along with 75% and 90% confidence limits. Individual certificates are also available for animals classified as typical elk. These certificates satisfy the requirements for registration with the Elk and Wapiti Society of New Zealand.
